I’ve been hoping someone would update this blog but I guess it will have to be me.
I’m enjoying this new feeder and my dish time view of these sweet hummingbirds.
Sweet? hardly! Awfully, awfully selfish and territorial. Here’s a female, constantly on her guard for one of the ruby-throated males zipping in to defend.
I’ve even moved one of the feeders to the other side of the house to give more space between the two and somehow the rascal manages to patrol both of them at once.
Certain times of the day, the lighting is so beautiful and compelling that I have to try to get a nice capture. I waited and waited yesterday, hoping a beauty would fly into the scene. One did, but it was ten minutes later and the colors were already changing from when I first noticed. (Who needs to add texture though when you have a window screen to shoot through??)
It’s only mid-August on the calendar but in my mind we’re already into September. The colors look like September. The nights feel like September. The afternoons sound like September. It’s even raining a beautiful September-ish rain here tonight… Thunder booms and lighting jabs from all corners of the sky and the long, drawn out drizzle is soaking gently into every inch of the yard. The grass is turning green again and the birds are still singing as they feed, all so very different from how it was even a week ago.
I’m patiently waiting, but August has somehow passed me by. And I keep wondering how long the hummingbirds will be around to enjoy this season. Especially when they can’t read the calendar.
